Uric acid is produced from the natural breakdown of your body’s cells and from the foods you eat. Most of the uric acid is filtered out by the kidneys and passes out of the body in urine. High levels of uric acid in the blood can cause solid crystals to form within joints. This causes a painful condition called gout.
A uric acid blood test is done to help diagnose gout, check to see if kidney stones may be caused by high uric acid levels in the body and check to see if the medicine that decreases uric acid levels is working.
This test measures the amount of uric acid in your blood. Uric acid is a normal bodily waste product. It forms when chemicals called purines to break down. Purines are a natural substance found in the body and are also found in many foods such as liver, shellfish, and alcohol.
The uric acid blood test is used to detect high levels of this compound in the blood in order to help diagnose gout. The test is also used to monitor uric acid levels in people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer.
